Our Story

The story of our family is really the story of the beginning of Modern Mom Elixirs. The picture above is the 1st sunset on our honeymoon. We camped in a backwoods site with no running water but it was just us and the best views.

We had spent most of our free time hiking and exploring the places we moved to while my husband was in the infantry. This was taken in the Columbia Gorge, Oregon. It is one of the waterfalls that is in the Multnomah Falls hikes.

I went to college to become a forensic pathologist, as most college kids do, I changed my emphasis within my major. I took all the pre-med courses and while I loved them I excelled with plant biology. In my third year had an accident that prevented me from being around chemical exposure, which meant I couldn’t work in my earlier chosen profession. But I had a passion for plant biology, I loved running the greenhouse and truly enjoyed the chemistry labs I worked on as well.

Fast forward a few years and while I was working at my high school I seen an old friend who was working his hometown recruiting assignment. Went on a date, and then another… 3 weeks of dating turned into me moving down to his base to start a new adventure with him.

I was diagnosed and treated for cancer while he was deployed and I turned to my education and my love of nature to shape how I moved on. I had spent countless hours in the woods and outside as a kid. I had spent countless hours running greenhouses and tending plants. It was a natural progression to begin my holistic way of life.

After I had my first child I went through what many new parents go through. The worry that I was doing everything right, that he was going to have the best chance at life and not have to go through my hardships. I began my aromatherapy education while we lived in Washington. Spending as much time as I could gardening, hiking, camping and teaching my child (then children) that life is best simple. Simply enjoy life, look for beauty always and have perspective.

Once my husband had finished his career in the Army we moved back to our home state, Michigan. I, by that time, had 3 boys. One diagnosed autistic already, another having medical issues that took YEARS to diagnose and our youngest was 6 weeks. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, though I knew that it would have to be flexible in hours because a newborn and 2 special needs kids was nothing to balk at. So I began my herbal education. While I have my plant biology degree and have a understanding of anatomy, physiology and chemistry from college it had been almost 10 years since I had graduated. Plus the herbal education I finished was more from a holistic and treatment perspective, instead of just a scientific education perspective.

I ended up with a very well rounded but targeted education. I would love to continue my education to become a naturopathic doctor, but that will be far in the future. When my children are older and we have a better handle on the special needs each of my 3 boys have. I love ever second of my life, my boys, my family. We camp, hike or nature journal every week. They enjoy helping me with my garden and wild harvesting on our hikes.

While I have spent SO many years on this journey, it is still the journey of my family as well. They are learning to love the land and natural life. Every product has many weeks, months or years of research and development.

Let me help you find the product right for you! Whether it is natural postpartum care, facial care targeted for different skin types or stress relief sorely needed in our busy, high speed life.

The boys “scouting the trail”, aka racing each other. One of our pups along for the hike too. This time we found Jewelweed but I will not let the boys harvest that flower. It is almost always near Poison Ivy, it is also the only herbal remedy that will treat Poison Ivy. This was taken on a state park trail near Houghton Lake, MI.
